Modern multilingual editing: a new non-degree post-diploma programme of study

event-date: 03.09.2012 - 28.09.2012

The non-degree post-diploma study programme in the field of multilingual editing is offered to the candidates who hold a graduate (long- and second-cycle) or undergraduate (first-cycle) diploma in any field of study and want to become professional editors. The programme consists of 270 compulsory 45-minute teaching units: lectures and/or classes worth 65 ECTS points altogether.

The lessons and classes take place on a part-time basis: once every two weeks, on Fridays and Saturdays. The teaching staff consists of the JU Faculty of Philology academic staff members and a team of experienced professional editors. To complete the programme, the students are supposed to complete all courses and pass all exams that are listed in the programme curriculum. The graduates receive the Certificate of Completion of Post-Diploma Studies with the mark which is the weighted mean of all final marks received during their course of studies.

The major objective of the programme is to educate future editors by providing the students with the proper knowledge and training. The students will be made familiar with the vital aspects of broadly understood editor's work with the special focus on the issues related to multilingualism, including the major stages of linguistic preparation to text translation process and the specific features of verification and correction of text material in selected European and non-European languages. The programme covers text-edition rules in four language groups: Romance, Germanic, Slavic and Oriental languages.

Another important goal is to familiarize the students with the specific features of all stages of  publishing process and the latest technology used in this field. The greatest emphasis is put on education in text-setting and graphics software, including its use in publisher's work, and on introducing students to the issues related to adapting texts and graphics for e-book readers and the Internet. The students will learn to use the relevant software, including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Ilustrator, Trados 2007, Trados Studio 2009, and Adobe Acrobat, to evaluate and design the content of websites, ensure their basic functionality, edit documents circulating in the Internet, and use the basic tools of publishing materials on the Internet.

Besides, the programme curriculum includes courses on copyright issues, the knowledge of which is of great importance to publishers. A special emphasis is put on the main rules governing contracts and clauses and on the issues related to copyright in the Internet and the digital environment in general. Besides the theory, the practical exercises and project running tasks will equip the students with practical knowledge about conception, creation, and promotion of various types of publications, and thus enable them to work in publishing houses or run their own companies providing services to publishing houses. In each case they will perform their job as highly qualified professionals.
